Coming up at The Tower this Autumn...
Hello everyone and welcome to The Tower. Our aim is to provide the perfect home for all that's best in local, national and international music, theatre, visual arts and arts-related learning for the people of Winchester and the surrounding areas.
With a full evening programme of events and a packed diary of classes and activities for all ages, The Tower
is (and has been for over 20 years) one of the leading lights in the UK performing arts' scene. In that time, The Tower has played host to such acts as The Mighty Boosh, Russell Brand, John Cooper Clarke, Bert Jansch, Kaos Theatre, Andy Sheppard, Frank Turner, Eddie Izzard, Benjamin Zephaniah, Eliza Carthy, Forkbeard Fantasy, Al Murray, Show Of Hands, Eric Bibb, Gervase Phinn, the Liverpool poets, Lloyd Cole, Giant Sand, Steven Berkoff, Jo Brand, Pete Best, Wendy Cope and many, many more.
Continuing in this tradition, the next few months feature some of the best in music, theatre and the visual arts: from Southern India we have the Chethena Kathakali Company, a stunning mix of music, dance and drama that combines devotion and physical virtuosity with symbolic storytelling to produce one of the most impressive and vibrant forms of theatre in the world.
If music is your thing we have folk legends Dick Gaughan, Máire Ní Chathasaigh and Chris Newman all appearing; blues from Larry Miller and local guitar hero Lachlan Horne;
Australian country star Chloe Hall; the stunning Beverley Craven; the incredible Men They Couldn't Hang; dry wit and heart-felt stories from both Richard Digance and New York's very own Dean Friedman; and from Senegal we have kora master Sadio Cissokho with his four piece band.
Also this Autumn we have
an exhibition of work by local artist Kate Theodore, whose multi-dimensional work mixes different media and techniques to produce something that is entirely unique.
As far as we can, The Tower offers the artistic community, and all those involved in the world of culture who so request, the resources they need in order to develop their own projects, with particular focus being placed on up-and-coming artists with ties to the region and to its social context. With this in mind, The Tower is home to Blue Apple Theatre, Platform 4 Theatre, and Republic, a youth music initiative for the under 18s.
We work closely with other local arts providers such as the Theatre Royal, and the Discovery Centre; plus we have strong professional and personal ties to the University of Winchester; both local authorities; and numerous arts based organisations in the South.
We are also very proud to donate time, expertise and whatever space we can spare to the Winchester branches of Mencap, the Alzheimer's Society and the Stroke Association.
Thank you for your time and we look forward to seeing you soon.
