Many people are eager to improve their painting a drawing skills and often need encouragement to try new things.

On the wednesday classes, we explore different mediums, look at different styles of art (expressionism, abstract etc) and generally "have a go".

Each week I bring some reference material (art books, magazines, sometimes still life objects) which all relate to the day's topic, and hand out notes.

We also practice drawing using pencils, charcoal and remind ourselves of the importance of using tonal values in our work. Sometimes even going back to the basics.

The use of expressive brush strokes are also reviewed.

The world would be dull without colour and experimenting with colour mixing (the complimentary colours, mixing greens and neutrals etc) are also done.

Perspective, life drawing, buildings and people scenes are also covered. There is so much to explore in painting that time passes very quickly during these sessions.

I appreciate that everyone attending does different work and projects and I am to visit each member of the class as often as needed to give individual advice and encouragement.

Painting is a mixture of excitement, investigation and relaxation - and we all get lots of enjoyment doing it.

Do you love writing and would like to be part of a creative writing workshop?

Have you written stories but not been able to get useful feedback about them?

Do your poems need a final polish?

Are you trying to write a novel and finding it difficult to keep going alone?

The Tower’s ongoing Creative Writing Group can help you! This is a well established group open to new participants with some previous experience of creative writing. The group is run as a writing workshop, giving everyone a chance to share and discuss their work in progress as well as complete class exercises and optional homework. We cover all forms of creative writing depending on the interests of group members – currently we work on poetry, short and long fiction for adults and children, and autobiographical life writing. The intention of the class is to develop each individual’s skills through participation and feedback in a supportive environment. Some group members are published, some write purely for enjoyment. Each term we also spend time on specific topics of interest – recent areas covered include the special challenges of writing for children, writing about the world of work and tackling procrastination. The group is friendly and supportive, a great place for writers to grow and develop their skills.

An opportunity for artists to be very creative with colour and use any medium they wish. The atmosphere is relaxed and includes plenty of demonstrations and expert guidance from Clare. Suitable for all abilities.

Born in Devon and graduating from Winchester School of Art in 1985, Clare Goodman has spent several years dividing her time between Devon and Hampshire exploring the contrasting scenery and developing her technique as an impressionist painter.

Since graduation clare has held regular exhibitions of her work and completed numerous private commissions. She has also been involved in the Hampshire open studios scheme from its birth in 2000.

As Part of Open Studios, if you would like to visit her studio this summer it will be open from 16th - 30th August 12pm - 6pm daily at No. 5 West End Close, Winchester, SO22 5EW

You can also view her work at the Discovery Centre Winchester from June 7 - 22nd where she has prepared a one woman show.

As well as running courses at the Tower Clare also gives demonstrations and workshops to art societies and for Southampton City Art Gallery.
